5 biblical steps to heal an unhealthy relationship with food.

Have you ever found yourself staring at a beautiful garden? The chirping of birds, the wondrous scent and the visual splendor, transports you to a place of peace. That peaceful environment was lovingly created by a diligent gardener. You are a gardener and have the responsibility to plant seeds that will produce healthy fruit. Before you start planting seeds, you need to cultivate the land. If not, weeds will grow and smother the seedlings. In the case of an obese person, the soil of your heart need to be cultivated. Food addiction is a matter of the heart, thus dealing with it from a natural perspective will not bring the healing you desire. Obesity is a full-grown plant that have developed from a seed and will continue destroying other seeds from growing in your life. Exercising and dieting(cutting the weeds) is a temporary fix for a deeper wound(the root). The only way to stop weeds(obesity) from destroying your garden, is to remove their roots. Let’s look at ways to remove this plant for good.

1) Discover the reason behind your overeating.

Why are you overeating? Why are you turning to food for comfort? Perhaps there is brokenness in your life and food have become the bandages to cover a wound. What are you really hungry and thirsty for? Which season in your life was the reason for the seeds of food addiction to be planted? These are all questions that need to be answered so that we can start healing the wound and not the symptoms only.

Reasons why people might self-medicate themselves with food.

1)A broken family unit

2)Any form of abuse(verbal, physically or sexually)

3)Failed or difficult marriages/relationships

4)Failure

5)Loss of a loved one

6)Bad Habits

7)Stress

8)Loneliness and Depression

Once you have discovered the reason behind your obesity, you must destroy the root once and for all. Let’s look at a few practical ways in which this can be done.

1) Admit the truth

The first step is to admit that you have a problem with food. You have to admit that food is your comfort, joy and frenemy. You have to admit that you have abused food and in the process harmed your body. This is not as straight forward as you may think. It is quite obvious to the world, but it might not be as obvious to you. I refused to admit this. In public I ate small plates of food…people rarely saw me eating. At home it was the opposite…I consumed huge amounts of food. There came a time when I admitted that I was using food to numb my pain. I came clean to my family and friends about this. Once you have accepted that you have an unhealthy relationship with food, then the next phase can begin.

2) Repentance

In Exodus 20:3, God said, ‘’You shall have no other God’s before me.’’ In Matthew 22:37, Jesus says that we must love our God with our whole heart, soul and strength. The moment we committed our lives to Christ, we entered into a relationship with Him. Every time we’re depressed, offended or wounded and consume a whole tub of ice-cream, instead of giving our pain to God, then we are grieving the Holy Spirit. Do we feel guilty after a binge and ignore God for a while? Do we feel ashamed and unworthy to be in the Lord’s presence? Is food our God? Overeating made me hide away like Adam did, thus it became an issue that separated me from God.  Our Father will never give up on us and will heal us if we come to Him with a repentant heart. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us of our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Praise the Lord.

3) Confess the truth to others

Confessing your problem to others is pivotal for your healing. Once you bring to light what you have hidden, this stronghold will lose it’s grip over your life. The word of God says that we should confess our sins to one another (James 5:16). Speaking to a pastor or counselor is an important step, because you are going to need emotional support during this journey. They can be your accountability partner, help you work through your brokenness, minister deliverance and pray for your recovery. I know you’re probably afraid to do this. I certainly was, but sharing my pain with others helped me let go of food addiction. Whenever I wanted to binge eat, I would tell my mother or friends about it. I asked my friends to add me to their prayer lists. I encourage you to seek the counsel of wise and mature Christians…not everybody is equipped to help you in this area. Ask God for guidance in this matter.

4)Forgive those who must be forgiven.

Unforgiveness, Pride and Bitterness becomes a wall between you and God and must be removed so that His power can heal your brokenness. Confronting the pain people have caused you is extremely terrifying, yet extremely important. If you skip this step, then your healing might not occur. From personal experience, I held onto grudges, thus my healing took over 20 years to come to pass. Once I truly forgave people I felt God’s power flood into my heart. His power transformed me. Friends, please choose to forgive and surrender your pain to God. Maybe you need to forgive yourself and let go of the mistakes you have made. The Holy Spirit will help you with this process, thus ask Him to reveal what is concealed in your heart.

5) Replace the old habits with healthy ones.

Now that we have identified the root issues for your obesity, repented and forgave our offenders, it is time to plant new seeds that will grow and produce an amazing harvest.

5.1 Spend time with God!

Make your relationship with God your top priority. He will draw close to you, if you draw close to Him. Surrender your heart to Him and lay down all Idols and sin in your life. He is waiting to build a deeper relationship with you. Make him the Lord of your heart and He will change your life in every way. All glory to God!

Extra Reading: James 4:8, Psalms 1:2, Matthew 6:6, Revelation 3:20 and Psalm 91:1

5.2 Choose and maintain a healthy lifestyle

The second step is to learn about nutrition and fitness. Once you understand how different food groups affect your body, choose an eating plan that is sustainable. There are various eating plans available and it is important to discuss them with professionals. Forget about crash dieting, using the latest fads or weight-loss supplements. Your goal is to maintain a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life…No shortcuts allowed! You do not want to yo-yo diet, but remain consistent and dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle. Consistency brings results!

Start incorporating exercise into your lifestyle. Your fitness level is important when choosing exercise. In the beginning low impact exercise will be best for your joints. Walking and beginner strength training is a good place to start in terms of fitness. Once again, consult professionals because you can hurt yourself when doing exercise incorrectly.

5.3 Join a weight loss group

With the invention of technology, online interaction have taken off. There are wonderful on-line support groups where you can share your struggles and victories. Seeing others succeed will encourage you to persist and win your race. Your online family will be the spectators cheering for your victory from the sidelines. If you feel you need human interaction and accountability, then find a support group in your area. At this point in your journey, you need the encouragement and support from others. Doing it alone is never a good thing.

5.4 Follow successful people

Follow health heroes on Facebook or Instagram. A health hero is somebody who have succesfully lost weight and is victorious over emotional eating.  They have been in your shoes and have valuable advice that will help you to conquer food addiction. Follow nutrition experts, doctors, fitness trainers, life coaches, pastors, born again believers etc. Immerse yourself in the world of healthy living. Soon you will become an inspiration for people throughout the world!

5.5 Speak life!

Life and Death is in the power of the tongue. My friends this is a major weapon that you MUST use to overcome obesity. You must start confessing your victory. Fill your heart with seeds of victory and they will grow. Feed those seeds with the word of God and allow the water of the Holy Spirit to accelerate the growth process. Continue to use your mouth to speak God’s truth and you will transform before your own eyes. My friends, keep on speaking life over your healthy journey.

Devotional:Forgiven for disobedience.

1 Samuel 15:24. ‘’ I have sinned. I violated the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them. Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me so that I may worship the Lord.’’

In the book of Samuel, Saul was chosen by God after the people requested a King. One day during battle, King Saul offered a burnt offering which violated the commandment given to him by Samuel. ‘’ You shall go down before me to Gilgal and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. You shall wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you shall do.’’ (1 Samuel 10:8).

King Saul chose to disobey God’s commandment and believed his disobedience was justified (1 Samuel 13:11). Samuel then told Saul, ‘’ Your Kingdom will not endure, The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of His people, because you have not kept the Lord’s commandment.’’

Saul begged God’s forgiveness in 1 Samuel 15:24, but no forgiveness was given. Samuel grieved over Saul’s error and God told him to stop wasting His time.

I asked God about this situation and the Holy Spirit replied, ‘’Saul, did not have Jesus.’’ God could not forgive Saul for breaking the law, because Jesus Christ never died for his sins yet.

We are blessed and privileged to have Jesus Christ. His blood was shed for our transgressions. I know we’re disobedient and like Saul, make decisions that contradicts God’s plan for our lives. We are forgiven, yet some believers cannot receive this truth. They are living in the old covenant. God is not angry at you nor is watching you like a hawk standing with a rod to punish you. He is slow to anger and abounding in love. He is for you, not against you. He is your best friend and Father. You are forgiven. Receive it. Amen!

Scripture Reading.

1 John 1: 9. ‘’God is righteous and will forgive you, if you confess and repent from your sins. Go on and speak to Your Father and draw close to His loving arms.’’

The Tortoise and the Hare: A Christian version.

Once upon a time, a hare came across a grazing tortoise in the grass and said, ‘’ You’re disgusting! You’re so slow. Pathetic!’’ The rabbit demonstrated his superior ability by flexing, posing and running back and forth in top speed. The hare laughed when Mr. Tortoise lowered his head and continued grazing.

One day the tortoise had enough of being laughed at and decided to enter the animal-thon, a 5km race in the park. The hare appeared and the crowd went wild. When the tortoise took his place at the starting line, the animals began laughing and shouting insults at him. The tortoise watched the crowd, closed his eyes and breathed in deeply. He reminded himself that he was powerfully made in the image of God and that God would never forsake him. The announcer shouted, ‘’Go!” and the animals dashed out of the starting blocks. His eyes widened at the dust cloud growing in front of him. He turned his head to the crowd and sheepishly smiled when he heard one supporter yell, ‘’Tortoise power! Go Tort!’’

The tortoise started his race and a few minutes later stopped due to exhaustion. He looked back at the crowd and realized that everybody had left. He lifted his head to the sky and greeted the moon. In the darkness of the night, Mr. Tortoise continued the race. 3 days had passed, but he continued believing. The times he rested, he closed his eyes and prayed for strength, confessed that he would finish and enjoyed the grass growing on the side of the road.

On a bright and sunny day, the tortoise stood frozen in his tracks when he came face to face with his Goliath. In the middle of the road, Mister Hare stood with 10 medals around his neck. Tortoise slowly began turning around, but stopped when he heard people chanting his name. He shed a tear when he realized his fan was standing behind him and shouting encouragements at him. This time he brought 10 more fans with him. They cheered him on and this awakened his beast mode.

Mr. Hare ran towards the tortoise and stood before him. ‘’ Look what the cat dragged in 2 years later,’’ he said.

The tortoise looked into his eyes and said, ‘’ your insults no longer affect me…it is like water off a ducks back.’’

‘’You’re useless. The race had been finished years ago. I won 10 races already and you’re only at this stage of your first race. What a joke.’’

‘’ I was a fool to believe I was worthless. I was fool to believe in someone irrelevant like you, rabbit. This is my race. I am the only competitor in this race called my life. I will give God all the glory when I finish the chapter of this story.’’

A flash of lightning lit up the dark skies, thus the hare dashed for his den. The slow and steady tortoise continued on even though the storm was brewing fiercely. The tortoise opened his eyes and realized that the finish line was in front of him. When he crossed the finish line, he rejoiced and said, ‘’ I finally made it…All praise to my God.’’

Please remember the story of the tortoise. He eventually got to the finish line, because he continued his race even though he faced setbacks. Do not compare yourself with the hares in your life. You are the only one running in your lane.

Victory is yours! Be consistent and dedicated and you will get to your finish line. With God by your side and your fans supporting you, you will be receiving your race medal. You can do this! May God strengthen you to achieve the impossible. All glory to God.
